Introduction

Hello! My name is Conner Holt and I am a Junior. I am a student in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Media. I am majoring in advertising. The coolest thing about my major is that advertising is everywhere. It is completely unavoidable.

I am also minoring in sociology. The coolest class I took last semester was criminology. It was my favorite class because I find crime incredibly fascinating to study. It was cool to learn about what goes into the thought process behind committing a crime.

My biggest accomplishment last semester was making the Dean's List and getting a 4.0 for my first semester since freshman year.

I did not really do much this summer besides work and take summer classes. However, right before school started I did go to Las Vegas with my dad. I had never been before and it was a really cool experience. Unfortunately I lost all the money I brought, but it was fun while it lasted. Being in Vegas was complete sensory overload. It was wild to be able to walk into a bar, grab a drink and walk back onto the strip.

My favorite movie of all time is The Prestige. I am a total sucker for Christopher Nolan films. I will watch any movie with Christian Bale. The best movie I have seen in the past year was Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. I know it is a movie for kids, but I found the story incredibly compelling. It also had some of the best animation I have ever seen.

My favorite band is Car Seat Headrest. They make modern rock and roll. They kinda sound like if The Strokes had made their debut 15 years later. They have high energy songs with thoughtful lyrics. I have seen them twice in concert. I drove to Kansas City and Dallas to see them, and I cannot wait until they tour again. Will, if your reading this please come to Oklahoma to save me the trip.

  1. Hey Conner! One of my friends at OU is in journalism. I can't even imagine the amount of writing you must have to do.

I haven't seen much of Christopher Nolan's films but in my Music in Film class last semester, we took a look at the fantastic music in Interstellar and in The Dark Knight Rises.

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse is a fantastic film. I do disagree on one thing, though. It's not a movie for kids; it's a movie that can be enjoyed by all ages.

I looked up Car Seat Headrest, and you have an excellent taste in music.

  2. Hey Conner!
You're certainly right about advertising being everywhere. Do you have a particular format you work with when creating ads (like billboards vs. web ads?) I've never been to Las Vegas, but it sounds like quite the time. And hey, even if you lost some money, when in Vegas, right? I've never heard of Car Seat Headrest, but I love rock music, so I will definitely be looking them up!

  3. Hi Conner!! I hope to see some of your advertisements in the future! Unfortunately, I do not think I am creative enough to do any sort of advertising. I have never taken a criminology class, but I have watched "Criminal Minds" and I definitely wanted to be apart of the BAU!! I think that would be a super cool class to take and I might look into that.

  4. Hey Connor,

Criminology also interests me. When I first attended college 8 years ago (wow, that makes me sound old), I majored in Criminal Justice and Paralegal Studies. I also love the psychology behind people's actions. I think that's why I decided to pursue a career in Social Work instead. I wanted to be on the side that analyzes and hopes to prevent people from making those bad choices. Also, I know music pretty well, but I have never heard of Car Seat Headrest. Looking at Rebekah's comment though, it sounds like I'll have to check them out.

  5. Hi Conner!
My summer looked really similar to yours--for the first half of the summer I worked, and for the second half I was back here in Norman taking classes. Not exactly a glamorous summer, but definitely beneficial to my future! I was required to take sociology for the graduate schools I am applying to and I really enjoyed it. I never had the chance to take criminology, but I am planning on doing a clinical rotation with inmates while I am in grad school, so I'm hoping this will give my a little bit of insight on criminology.

  6. Hello Connor,
I am a Communication major and I am currently taking a Media/Society course and we are learning about some advertising in that class. It is truly crazy how much advertising is out there and how much media depends on it. I am interested in this band you spoke of! I will have to check them out. Also, congrats on making it on the Dean's list, especially right out of high school!

  7. Hey Conner! I'm also a Gaylord major (journalism) and my roommate is a senior advertising major as well! I don't know about you, but I spend way too much time in that building. I've been meaning to go to Las Vegas; I think me and some buddies are going there for spring break this year. You might have to let me know which places are the best to gamble! I'm also a big fan of Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight will forever be one of the best movies I've seen.

  8. Hey Conner,
My sister is also majoring in advertising, I think but I am not sure because she switches majors a lot. I have always wanted to take a criminology class but have never had the time. Just from your brief description I feel that I would have really enjoyed it. Congrats on getting the 4.0. that is a big deal to do at a big university like this. The Prestige was definitely a great film and to me was a modern masterpiece that showed how to create a film with a lot of twists and turns. Hope your semester goes well man!

  9. Hi Conner, it's nice to meet you!

You're definitely right about advertising - it's completely unavoidable. Do you know what type of advertising interests you? It's such a broad term, so I'm curious; are you thinking like billboards, tv commercials, online ads, written ads like in a magazine or newspaper, or what?

By the way, although I haven't seen it, I actually know a lot of people our age who like Into the Spiderverse!

  10. Hi Conner! It's really nice to meet someone else who minors in sociology. I usually only see sociology majors in my sociology classes. I haven't taken criminology yet but I definitely want to take it before I graduate. A friend of mine told me that she really enjoyed the class and hearing the same from you motivates me to find a way to fit it in my schedule. Congrats on making the Dean's List--that's a great accomplishment!

  11. Hey man it's awesome that you are a minor in sociology! I also like that you mentioned a new old band that sounds like the strokes. I was a big fan of he strokes back in highschool and even now I still listen to them. I might check them out since you brought them up! Anyways, I look forward to reading more of our stories!

  12. Hey Conner!
I had never actually been inside our famous Gaylord building until last week. I am a senior at OU. My best friend is also a student in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Media. They are majoring in advertising as well so I am fairly familiar with the topic. She really wants to travel because as you mentioned earlier, you an advertise anywhere! Wish you the best!

  13. Hey Connor! I really enjoyed reading this introduction! It really gave me a good idea of who you are and what you like to do. I also worked and took classes this summer. It wasn’t too fun, but I felt really productive after! I also feel like it allowed me to have more fun this semester! Anyways, I hope you’re having a great semester! Keep up the good work.

  14. Hey Connor!
The Prestige is one of my favorite movies ever also, I just watched it like three weeks ago! Christopher Nolan is the best, I also love his movie Memento. It's neat that you're a sociology minor, I've taken a couple sociology classes just for fun and enjoyed them a lot. Your intro makes me want to take Criminology before I graduate next year. Your trip to Vegas sounds like it was super fun. Have a good semester!

  15. Hey there! Congratulations on making the Dean's list with your 4.0! That is so difficult to do especially in our later years of college where the work load just gets heavier and harder. I am so jealous you went to Las Vegas! I have always wanted to go there, but I know I need to save up more money before I do so, that way I can hopefully not lose too much money while I am there!

  16. Hello Connor!

I had a friend that minored in sociology! She always talked about the classes she took and always made them sound really interesting! I wish I could take some of those class but unfortunately my schedule is packed. Criminology sounds found! If you like that class you might be interested in this show on netflix called mindhunter. Its about serial killers, it's pretty creepy at times but so interesting! Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  17. Hey there Connor! Thank you for sharing a little bit of who you are with the class. It sounds like you are interested in some diverse subjects, which is such a great trait to have. I am frequently jealous of sociology majors or minors because the classes seem like so much fun. As a religious studies major, human thought really interests me, and there are many ways that religion and sociology are similar. I wish you the best for this semester!

  18. HI Connor! congrats on making the dean's list last semester! That is an amazing accomplishment. I too am a big fan of Christopher Nolan moves, especially The Dark Night Rises. He and Christian Bale have such a great chemistry. Criminology sounds like an interesting class, and I wonder how it is taught here in OU. Good luck the rest of the semester!

  19. Hello Connor!! Congrats on making the Dean's List last semester!! That is a dope accomplishment and I wish I could get on that list, but I am getting there. I am glad you are enjoying your criminology class. That sounds like such an awesome class to take. Crime is an interesting concept to me so that sounds like such a cool class. 20. Hi Conner! Thank you so much for sharing. I think it is awesome that you are majoring in advertising and minoring in sociology. Criminology seems like such a cool class, and I sure it was so interesting to see the thought processes! Also, it’s awesome that you were able to visit Las Vegas! I have never been, but I want to go at some point… I can’t wait to read more of your posts.

  21. Hi Conner,

I loved Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse as well! I think the animation in that movie was so amazing and made it so much more than just a kid's movie. The storyline was pretty good too! They're coming out with the part two in 2022, I just retweeted the announcement the other day! Good luck the rest of this semester and I hope life is treating you well!

  22. Hey Conner,

You're right about advertising being everywhere. I find the psychology behind advertising fascinating, like how to tailor an advertisement to target a certain customer. The other day I heard how companies will target kids instead of the parents and I thought that was a really good strategy. Sorry you lost all your money in Vegas but I have it listed as my favorite place on my blog! Check it out if you're interested. Good luck the rest of the semester.

  23. Hey Connor,

I too loved Spiderman! But let's be honest, who didn't. I think it is really cool that you are a musician, I have a few friends who play gigs around Norman so I can definitely understand the grind you are going through. Stay strong! If I can tell anything from your storytelling ability its that you have the ability to communicate affectively. Keep playing and keep writing.
